►SOCIO-ECONOMIC ASPECTS IN MINING AREAS
►RURAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES IN MINING AREAS
Social and economic aspects of open-cast mining are a very disputed subject all over the world. But as long as the immediate effects upon the surroundings are favourable, it is a bad turn to shut down the mine rather than to continue, even if an important percentage of the county's area is drawn out of the productive agricultural circuit.
These effects are diminished when intensive agriculture is practised and if the mining ensures supplementary income for local population.
In the Oltenia coal field, 17.731 hectares have been drawn out of the economic circuit, out of which 12.877 hectares agricultural land and 4.854 hectares forestry land. Out of these, 9.250 hectares, out of which 7.857 hectares agricultural land and 1.398 hectares forestry land, have been returned to the agricultural circuit.
Land recultivation is a complex system of measures technical-mining, technologic engineering, improvement, agrotechnical…., which should restore degraded land fertility, and create a new, best organised and cultivated, landshaft which responds to the multiple human needs.
Starting from the fundamental idea that man should co-operate with the environment and consciously become its protector, the achievement of economic growth is required, in perfect accordance with the environment al preservation and protection demands.
